Massive Gas Explosion in Nairobi Kills Two and Injures Hundreds

Nairobi, Kenya – In a tragic incident that unfolded on Thursday night, a massive gas explosion at an industrial site in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi has claimed the lives of two people and left hundreds injured. The explosion occurred in the Mradi area of Nairobi County’s Embakasi neighborhood, southeast of the city’s central business district.

The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. when a truck loaded with gas cylinders exploded, causing a tremendous fireball. Videos shared online captured the horrifying sight of the massive fireball, which engulfed the industrial site identified as the Kentainers Company. The flames from the fireball extended to residential houses, damaging vehicles and businesses in its path.

Tragically, two individuals lost their lives while receiving medical attention at the Nairobi West Hospital. In addition, 222 other Kenyans were injured and immediately rushed to various hospitals for treatment. The nearby Oriental Godown, a garment and textile facility, was completely destroyed after being hit by a gas cylinder propelled by the explosion.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura issued a statement on Friday morning, confirming the devastating incident and revealing that the Kentainers Company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire erupted. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, with firefighters working tirelessly to extinguish the flames.

The situation on-site has now been brought under control, and authorities have secured the area. However, residents are advised to avoid the vicinity due to an ongoing rescue operation. The Kenya Red Cross reported that 271 individuals have been evacuated to various health facilities in Nairobi, while Emergency Plus Ambulances Kenya attended to more than 50 people at the scene.

In a video message, Nairobi County assembly woman Esther Muthoni Passaris, who was in Mombasa for meetings at the time of the explosion, urged residents to donate blood. She emphasized the urgent need for blood donations to assist burn survivors, stating that “burn survivors need a lot of blood.”

As investigations into the cause of the gas explosion continue, the local community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic incident. The thoughts and prayers of many are with the families who have lost their loved ones and those injured in the explosion..
