Indian-American Student Found Dead in the US, Fourth Such Incident this Year
New Delhi: In yet another tragic incident, an Indian-American student was found dead in the United States on Thursday, marking the fourth such occurrence this year. The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed the news, stating that foul play is not suspected at this stage. The student has been identified as Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a student of the Lindner School of Business, Cincinnati. The Indian Mission in New York has expressed profound anguish over the incident and assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of Beniger’s untimely death.
This distressing news comes just days after the unfortunate demise of Purdue University student Neel Acharya, who was reported missing on Sunday and later discovered dead on the university campus. Acharya’s mother, Gauri, pleaded for help on social media, sharing that her son had gone missing and was last seen by an Uber driver who dropped him off on campus. Tragically, Acharya’s death was confirmed shortly after.
Meanwhile, another heart-wrenching incident took place in Lithonia, Georgia, where 18-year-old Vivek Saini, a resident of Panchkula in Haryana, was brutally beaten to death by a homeless man on January 16. The autopsy revealed that Saini succumbed to hypothermia.
The recent surge in such cases has raised concerns among the Indian community in the United States. Following the disappearance of Akul Dhawan, his parents have filed a complaint against the university police department, accusing them of negligence and inaction. Dhawan’s father, Ish Dhawan, expressed his disbelief, stating, “It’s unfathomable that our son was found dead, frozen, just minutes away from where he was last seen.”
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Shreyas Reddy Benigeri and assured his family of all necessary assistance during this difficult time. They also emphasized that they are closely coordinating with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of student safety and the need for enhanced security measures to protect the Indian student community studying abroad. The Indian government, along with various educational institutions, must work together to address these concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of Indian students pursuing their dreams overseas..
